Sometimes, blocking your windows with heavy drapes and curtains could be the only reason natural light does not flow into your home. In such a case, all you need to do is draw the curtains open and remove anything else blocking the windows to let light in. If you want to keep the shades drawn and still have lighting, go for light-colored or translucent shades that let in light, while keeping the chilly breeze or dust out.

Improve reflectivity inside the home

The color of walls inside the home can often determine whether your home will be bright or dull and dark. Most of the times, dark colored walls make it seem like there is no natural light. But the fact remains that the light from outside is not being reflected enough by the walls, making the room darker than it should be.

Another way to improve lighting in the house is to have mirrors. If you have limited number of windows, place a mirror or reflective glass facing the window that lets in natural light to make the place seem brighter.

White ceilings

Ceilings play a significant role in determining how bright the home is. Usually, the color of the ceiling must be lighter than the color of the walls. As far as possible, select a ceiling color that is close to the color of the walls, but lighter in shade. White may not always be the best choice of color for the ceiling. Go for off-white or any other light color in matte paint, which is great for reflecting light. Avoid glossy colors as they create glare and may not distribute light naturally around the room.

Keep dark hangings in shade

Paintings, posters and other dark hangings should be kept away from sunlight as they tend to absorb light rather than distribute it. That makes the room look dark in spite of the presence of natural light. The best way to distribute natural light in a room is to keep the walls opposite windows bare or hand mirrors or reflective surfaces there.
