4 Things To Do Before Your Home Energy Assessment

An energy audit can help make sure their homes are operating at peak efficiency! They will find any trouble spots and show the homeowner ways they can save money on their utility bills. If you’re interested in making one of the smartest investments a homeowner can make, there are a few things you should do beforehand. Here are four things our team at E3 Power recommends our customers do before a home energy assessment

1. Prepare Your Home

There are several things you should do to your home before an energy auditor arrives. These will make his life easier and will make it easier to get an accurate assessment of your home. Some things to do before the auditor arrives include:

  • Close windows and doors
  • Raise blinds and draw open curtains
  • Allow access into crawl spaces, access hatches, or attic spaces
  • Secure pets
  • Empty the ash of a fireplace

Doing this will help make the process quick and easy.

2. Prepare Energy Bills

You should have copies of your energy bills for the past 12 months ready when the auditor arrives. Gather up all of your electricity, heating, and cooling bills. If you don’t have copies, you can request copies from your electric utility supplier.

The auditor will be able to go over these bills and determine what looks right and what looks wrong. If something pops out on your bills, the auditor will be able to determine a likely cause for any suspiciously high charges. This step will go a long way in helping you save money on your bills.

3. Make a List of Problems

Bring up any area of concern you may have with your home with your auditor. So you don’t forget it’s recommended that you write a list to share with the auditor. Your auditor will understand that you’re not an expert in the field so don’t worry about getting too technical.

Place any area of concern on the list such as visible condensation, uncomfortable rooms, mold, dampness, or pest problems. Your auditor may be able to diagnose your issues simply off the information you provide them with.

4. Know the Following Information

Along with your bills, there is other information you can present the auditor with that will help make the process easier. The more your auditor knows the more accurate your home energy assessment will be. The more accurate the home energy assessment is, the more money you will save in the long run. Here are some of the things you should share with your auditor:

  • Average thermostat settings for summer and winter
  • Occupants in the house
  • Heating and cooling zones
  • Occupancy during daytime hours
  • Presence of heat pumps, electric space heaters, or medical equipment

This information will help you get a better understanding of your home’s energy efficiency.
