One of the many encumbrances of business is cost-effectiveness. From raw materials to employee utilization, Denver business owners keep on looking for ways to reduce expenses and improve the profit margin. However, one common thing that is often overlooked is the amount of money that can be saved if electricity consumption is managed, particularly on lighting and usage of light bulbs.
Technology has provided us several options to save on energy consumption. Below are some tips how you, as a businessman, can save energy every day.
Reduce Your Bulbs’ Wattage
Rooms do not have to be so bright, unless if you are operating a hospital or a function hall. In many businesses, bright lights are not entirely a necessity. If you must use high wattage bulbs, try to alternate the positions of bulbs with different brightness—one high wattage next to low wattage. The bulbs with low wattage will be compensated by those that have high wattage.
Spread Out the Bulbs
About low wattage bulbs, it is better to have multiple bulbs strategically positioned in different areas of the room. These bulbs must also have different switches. This way, you can turn off the bulbs in a particular area if not in use and only turn on bulbs in specific areas.
Use Dimmers or Turn Bulbs Off
Dim lights have lower energy consumption. With dimmers, you can adjust the brightness of the lights according to what is needed. Or better yet, turn off every light that is not in use or if it is not necessary to turn them on, especially in the mornings when the sun is still bright. Open your windows and use solar power. After the shift, turn off all the lights except for maybe a couple.
Use Energy Efficient Bulbs
Today, LED bulbs are the most popular cost efficient bulbs. Many people do not use LED bulbs because they are expensive. What they do not realize is that the money they shelled out for the LED bulb pales in comparison to the money they will save on electricity cost.
LED bulbs can last up to 60,000 hours while ordinary bulbs can only last for 1,000 hours. This means you would have already replaced your ordinary bulb sixty times before an LED bulb even needs a replacement. Also, traditional light bulbs emit as much as 90% of heat energy. So while you are paying for that energy, you are only receiving 10% of energy converted into light.
Do Not Use Fixtures with Multiple Fittings
Although chandeliers look pleasant to the eye, you must realize that these are power guzzlers, especially those that need six or eight different bulbs to light completely. These are decorative pieces but are not practical. A better alternative is to buy chandeliers that do not need bulbs but hang them where they receive direct light from an intense LED bulb.
Use Motion Sensor Lighting System
This applies very well if the office is vacated at night and nobody stays. These bulbs will turn off if the sensors do not detect any movement. This is good for offices that do not operate at night or businesses whose employees keep forgetting to turn off the lights.
Use Solar Power
Use solar-powered lamps or bulbs in areas that need lighting at night but receive a fair amount of sunlight in the day. These solar-powered bulbs and lighting systems will absorb the sunlight in the morning, store the power in a battery, and use it of you turn the lights on. You will not pay electricity for solar-powered lighting fixtures.
Another thing you can do is to schedule a commercial energy audit. These are professionals who can help measure your actual lighting energy consumption and make professional recommendations on how you can save.
