Preparing for Your Energy Audit

Thank you for choosing e3 Power for your Home Energy Audit! The right energy audit company can help Colorado homeowners:

  • Make their homes more comfortable
  • Save money on heating and cooling bills
  • Reduce their impact on the environment

Depending on the size and complexity of your home and the level of energy audit being performed, the entire audit process typically takes about 3-4 hours to complete. But before your e3 Power auditor arrives, there are a few simple things you can do to prep and help your scheduled appointment go as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Here’s a home energy audit checklist to follow:

  • Make a list of any existing problems in your home.
Have you noticed that your upstairs gets noticeably warmer than the bottom floor of your home on summer afternoons? Do you ever see condensation on your windows? Do ice dams form on certain parts of your roof in the winter? Trained and experienced auditors will recognize these signs as potential symptoms of poor home performance, which can help inform your home’s energy audit process.
  • Collect copies of your utility bills for the previous 12 months. This includes usage and cost per month for electricity and gas (kWh and Therms).
Taking the size of your home into account, historical energy usage (including electricity, heating, and cooling costs) helps your auditor determine how efficient (or inefficient) your house is. We’ll also use your energy bills to estimate how much you could save by installing more insulation, air sealing, or making additional upgrades to your home.
  • Give your auditor some context to help them understand your home energy use.
What do you usually set your thermostat to in the summer and winter? How many people are living in your home, and when are they usually in the house? Providing your auditor with this information will help facilitate a comprehensive and detailed energy audit report, as we can make specific suggestions for energy and money-saving measures to take in your Denver or Boulder home.
  • Make sure that the energy auditor has clear access to your attic(s) and/or crawlspace(s).
e3 Power’s audits are comprehensive evaluations of your home, not surface-level walkthroughs. Often, energy efficiency problems in a home can be traced back to the very top or bottom of the home, which makes it important for us to be able to visually evaluate areas like your attic, crawl space, and basement.
  • Don’t start any wood fires 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.
Whole house energy audits can include blower door testing, which tests air leakage in your home. You’ll want to make sure your fireplace or wood stove is clean and clear of embers and ash before blower door testing starts, as the depressurization of your home can suck ashes or embers into your living area, creating a mess or even a fire hazard.
  • Close all doors and windows prior to your audit.
For the most accurate blower door test results, you’ll need to close all windows and exterior doors to measure the amount of air leakage in your home and ensure that equipment like infrared thermal cameras produces accurate test results.
